Lands of Palestine, occupied territories
6 august 2002

Salam aleicom,
i write you from an hostel in Jerusalem, after 7 hours of waiting and answering an insistent interrogation on the frontier of Allenby Bridge (Hussein King Bridge for the arabs), finally succesful in this border-hack in the attempt to get into the palestinian territories occupied by the israeli forces.

I wasn't sure to reach in this quest until i saw the Damascus Gates, crowded by one of the most intense and smellful markets that i ever saw in my life, between the narrow streets of Jerusalem east.

That has been the incipt of this project. It is an effort to discover and document what nowadays remains untouched by the war within the palestinian popular culture: in search for joy carefully ignoring the surrounding nightmare of war, thru the imagination and the picture of life that the millenary Palestine shows to who's crossing his territories.

... to depict Palestine without mentioning war

FARAH is a net-art project employing internet's privileges to unveil a beauty usually hidden by war. All the materials consist in photos audio and texts I collected during a trip thru Jerusalem, Gaza, Bethlehem, Hebron and Ramallah in war times: the period preceeding the Gaza First initiative and including the assassination of Ahmad Saadat. Despite the context, I never depict the war itself in any material.

... I went there to share while learning

I went in those territories in such a period not only for this project: also to share my knowledge and my creations, while learning about the different needs of a population oppressed by war, to see how i could help.

... this project is not finished

FARAH project is not finished, i'll gather some new materials in my next and probably longer trip and, most important thing, i'll see again all my dear friends in Palestine!

... all the materials are free

You can redistribute and publish, in their integrity and even for commercial purposes, the materials you will find here and published on the website, giving correct credits to the author:

Also all the software employed to produce this project is free, in part developed by myself, while sounds and images are published using free and open formats (jpeg, png and ogg/vorbis).

... the many people who's helping

Crucial contributions for FARAH come from the ospitality I received from the Palestinian Progressive Youth Union which hosted me one week in a beautiful summer camp on the beach of Gaza, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the International Solidarity Movement and people from Indymedia Italy and Indymedia Palestine.

Waves and thanks go to many "compagni di viaggio" crossing my same roads:
Meri, Vincenzo, Marais a.k.a Azalai, Elena, Salah, Maha, Hamdi, Blicero, Saed, Mimmo, Hadil, Sophia, Mohammed, Manuel, Liz, Samir, Niccolo', Zeid, Eiad, the islamic student playing chess at the dawn in gaza and the kids i was swimming with in my same Baha.

I also contributed and keep sporadically to contribute (not enough as i wish to!) to the work of Radio OndaRossa on 87.9 FM in Rome and surroundings: if you are interested in fresh news from Palestine and you understand italian, I suggest you tune on their frequencies, there is also a web live stream.

... how to receive updates

There is a mailinglist of FARAH, you can:
subscribe by sending a mail to farah-subscribe @ dyne.org
unsubscribe simply sending a mail to farah-unsubscribe @ dyne.org

Whenever it is possible for me to be online, i am reachable via IRC on the server irc.freenode.net into the channel #dyne.
